One million Americans have
inflammatory bowel disease.
Approximately half have
Crohn's disease, the other half have
ulcerative colitis. Boston Medical
Center offers a variety of innovative
medical, surgical and minimally
invasive treatments for these painful
diseases.
Crohn's disease is a serious inflammatory
disease that can affect all
layers of the gastrointestinal tract.
Medications, including anti-inflammatory
agents, can decrease inflammation
and control symptoms.

When these medications do not
work sufficiently, surgery can be
considered.
Ulcerative colitis affects the lining
of the colon. Medications are also
used to control this disease. If they
do not work, surgery can be considered.
We offer an innovative procedure
in which the colon is removed
and the small bowel is used to create
a rectum. This helps patients avoid a
stoma.
Because of ongoing basic science
research in immunology, Boston
Medical Center specialists view these
diseases in a different light. Protocols
using new agents to treat IBD are
open to patients.
