The Center for Excellence In Women's Health
The inequities of health care provided to women exist across the social spectrum, but are especially acute in
populations of color and women in poverty. The BMC Center of Excellence in Women's Health offers a highly unique
coalition of state-of-the-art women's services across several institutions. BMC is one of 18 institutions
nationally, and the first in Massachusetts, to serve as a Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. BMC is at the
forefront in providing free mammography, osteoporosis screening and other early detection programs for women.
Outreach and education programs address breast health, bone health, menopause, comprehensive gynecology, lesbian
health, mental health and violence. Among the many programs within the Center, the Educational Materials initiative
is developing user-friendly educational materials on selected topics in women’s health. Such materials address a
number of critical issues including gender, culture in a very diverse multicultural population, socioeconomic
issues faced by a predominantly poor and often un- or under-educated population with low literacy rates and levels,
and linguistic barriers in a city serving as a gateway for new immigrants.
