Pediatric Immunization Outreach Initiative
Although the health of most children in the United States has never been better, the health of children living in the
inner city is substandard. The major goal of BMC’s Pediatric Immunization Outreach Initiative is to improve the
immunization rate of inner-city children through an effective and easy-to-use tracking system that saves time for
busy primary care providers. In addition, outreach workers will endeavor to locate children who have missed important
immunizations, schedule appointments, and insure complete follow-through on all vital services. Keeping track of
necessary preventive services (immunizations and screening tests for iron deficiency, lead poisoning, tuberculosis,
hearing, and vision) has historically been very difficult. Many of BMC’s patients are poor, move frequently from
place to place, and do not have continuous access to telephones. Many still lack health insurance. To address this
problem, a BMC physician recently developed a computer-based patient medical record software program called the
Automated Record for Child Health (ARCH). ARCH helps health care professionals to easily track immunizations,
thereby decreasing the number of children that miss important services.
