Learning, Not Waiting
The Learning, Not Waiting initiative at BMC seeks to convert the waiting areas in eight Department of Pediatrics
locations into learning spaces, providing our pediatric patients and their families accessible information about
health and development. Conversion of these spaces will increase patient and family knowledge, including self-help
strategies about general health and development, as well as specific illnesses and diseases. Each pediatric waiting
room will be refurbished to give it a fresh and inviting look, and to set the stage for later improvements. A
variety of educational materials will be added to the waiting rooms, including TVs/VCRS (allowing viewing of designated
materials), computer terminals (for access to information on-line), age-appropriate puzzles, educational games, exhibits,
posters, and photographs. The focus of the conversions will be health and education - intended to stimulate cognitive
development and allow for both individual and group exploration. Anatomic models of organs and other innovative
health-related materials will be available for patients to handle and for providers to use to inform and educate.
Mindful of the diverse cultures and backgrounds of our patients and their families, careful consideration will be
give to cultural competency.
