Child Health and Safety Program
There are many complex issues facing inner cities families with children. Three very common problems,
easily remedied with low-cost and simple interventions, are home injuries, lead poisoning and asthma
attacks. Boston Medical Center’s Child Health and Safety Program provides home safety visits to pediatric
primary care patients. Staff members and volunteers at the request of parents and physicians, make home
visits in order to evaluate basic safety protocols. The evaluation considers many environmental factors
including the presence of working smoke detectors, the need for window guards, the presence of lead paint,
and factors that might trigger allergic reactions for asthmatic children. The home visit also includes the
distribution of safety items such as window guards, radiator guards, water gauges and smoke detector
batteries. To date, these services are provided to approximately 45 to 65 families, or 200 children per year.
