As a leader in the field of sleep disorders, BMC regards the management of childhood sleep disorders as a critical complement to its nationally recognized work in pediatric neurology. Expert care. Dr. DeBassio is one of the few child neurologists in New England with board certification in the evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. With a newly established Sleep Disorders Training Program, the BMC Pediatric Sleep Services staff works to enhance physician knowledge about the frequency and importance of these disorders. Patient-focused approach. Our top priority is to provide patients and their families with compassionate clinical care and respect that can last a lifetime. Innovative technology and treatment options. Some patients are referred to BMC’s Sleep Laboratory for an overnight sleep study (polysomnogram). These studies help to diagnose many neurologic, breathing or movement disorders. Armed with this information, physicians can determine whether a patient has obstructive sleep apnea, which may require surgery; restless leg syndrome, which can be treated with medication, improved diet or exercise; or narcolepsy which may require a medication regimen to improve daytime performance. Multidisciplinary collaboration. The Sleep Program coordinates and collaborates with other BMC specialists from pulmonary medicine, otolaryngology, psychiatry and the obesity programs to offer comprehensive treatment plans for the many sleep disorders and their complications. Boston Medical Center’s Division of Pediatric Neurology provides the highest level of care for children with epilepsy, sleep disorders, cerebral palsy, autism, developmental delays, Tourette syndrome and other movement disorders.
