BMC’s Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology Team Provides Comprehensive Care for a Wide Range of Disorders

Boston Medical Center’s Section of Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology, part of BMC’s innovative Department of Pediatrics, provides comprehensive, compassionate medical care to children, adolescents and young adults with a wide range of metabolic and endocrine disorders.

The Section is led by two board-certified pediatric endocrinologists, Suleiman Mustafa-Kutana, MD, with Angelina Bernier, MD, and provides diagnosis, evaluation and recommendations for appropriate educational and medical therapies.

Expert care. The team has experience with the full range of pediatric endocrine disorders and provides a full complement of evaluation, diagnostic and treatment services. Among the disorders the team commonly sees are obesity and insulin resistance, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hypo- and hyperthyroidism, short stature, precocious puberty, delayed puberty, premature adrenarche, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), adrenal insufficiency and hypopituitarism.

Patient-focused approach. Patients receive expert care from physicians, nurses and educators. Dietary counseling by a nutritionist is available as part of the BMC clinic visit when needed or useful. A diabetes educator provides education at each patient visit, and patients and their families stay in contact with the diabetes team via pagers. 

Innovative treatment options. The group specializes in obesity, with a focus on the multiple endocrine consequences patients may be at high risk for, such as insulin resistance, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and more. Testing is offered in BMC’s pain-free testing unit, where capabilities include, but are not limited to, growth hormone stimulation tests, oral glucose tolerance tests, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) tests and ACTH tests for adrenal gland function evaluation. Additional available resources for patients include the BMC Demonstration Kitchen and BMC’s Nutrition and Fitness for Life Program.

Multidisciplinary collaboration. The team works closely with primary care physicians, and is able to consult readily with and make referrals to physicians in other specialties at BMC for additional diagnosis and treatment.
