Bilingual Open-Access Concussion Clinics Provide Expedited Treatment

Concussion symptoms can linger for weeks if left untreated. At BMC’s open-access clinic, the lengthy wait time is eliminated. Patients suffering from head trauma, concussion and other pediatric neurological conditions can find rapid relief at Boston Medical Center. The hospital’s new open-access clinic located within the state-of-the-art Shapiro Center enables athletes and accident afflicted children to be seen quickly, while BMC’s bilingual clinics provide non-native English speaking families the opportunity to easily communicate with their physician in Spanish.

Expert care. Experienced staff neurologists are available to see patients on very short order who have experienced head trauma and are suffering with acute onset problems that acquire immediate attention. The program is under the direction of Alcy Torres, MD, who has been named one of Boston’s best pediatric neurologists by Boston magazine and who is committed to strengthening BMC’s presence in pediatric neurology and in the Hispanic community.

Patient-focused approach. The program’s streamlined approach eliminates the lengthy waiting list, providing immediate care in its place with an open-access clinic held every Friday at its Shapiro Center location. Bilingual pediatric neurology clinics are located at East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and at clinics serving the Lawrence-Lowell and Fitchburg regions. While many other neighboring hospitals require specific insurance plans, BMC welcomes all types of coverage at both clinics.

Treatment options. Treated two ways, therapeutically or diagnostically, Boston Medical Center takes the burden off primary care physicians to make the call on sports-related concussion clearance with specialist consultation. In addition to walk-in appointments, BMC’s open-access clinic allows doctors to see inpatient and emergency room patients for follow-up, accelerating the response to urgent circumstances.

Multidisciplinary collaboration. Treating patients from infancy through age 21, adolescents afflicted with head trauma, concussion and headaches can find the help they need through the Pediatric Neurology Division at Boston Medical Center. The only of its kind in Boston, the clinics offer expedited evaluation by a team of staffed neurologists when immediate care is needed most.

BMC’s Pediatric Neurology Division is committed to clinical excellence and compassionate coordinated care for children and their families across the broad spectrum of healthcare settings.
