Distinguished Bariatric Surgery Program Provides
Patients considering weight loss surgery are in the very best hands at Boston Medical Center. The hospital’s Bariatric Surgery Program is one of Boston’s largest and is recognized as a fully accredited Center of Excellence and verified Level 1A Bariatric Center by the American College of Surgeons. It is also the only bariatric program in the city to be given a five-star rating by HealthGrades®.
Expert care. National leaders in the field of bariatric surgery and weight management collaborate to help patients at all levels of obesity implement personalized strategies to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. The program is under the direction of Donald Hess, Jr., MD, who is consistently recognized as a leading bariatric surgeon in publications such as the U.S. News & World Report and Boston Magazine.
Patient-focused approach. The program’s coordinated approach allows for a seamless patient experience through the preoperative, surgical and recovery phases as well as through ongoing follow-up care. Mandatory information sessions educate patients on the commitments and challenges that are inherent with weight loss surgery, and peer support groups provide inspiration and encouragement to patients in all phases of treatment. While other bariatric programs charge hundreds of dollars for non-physician services, BMC is pleased to waive the program fee for its patients, which includes dietician services, exercise programs and support groups.
Innovative technology and treatment options. Weight loss surgeries offered at the center include the adjustable gastric band, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. In nearly all procedures, minimally invasive techniques are implemented to lessen discomfort, shorten hospital stays and reduce scarring.
Multidisciplinary collaboration. BMC’s multidisciplinary Bariatric Surgery Program includes internists, nurse coordinators, dietitians, physical therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists and experienced surgeons. The team works closely with caregivers in the Nutrition and Weight Management Center to provide patients with ongoing nutritional counseling, behavioral therapy support and pharmacotherapy.
