The Breastfeeding Center team

Director

Anne Merewood, MPH, IBCLC is Director of the Breastfeeding Center at Boston Medical Center, and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Boston University School of Medicine.  Anne gained her undergraduate degree in English at Cambridge University, England, and came to the US in 1987. After 15 years working as a journalist, she changed fields, to began working at BMC in 1996, and became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 1999. Anne worked as Director of Lactation Services and Director of Research for the Breastfeeding Center, and became Director in 2006. In the same year she gained a Masters in Public Health at the Boston University School of Public Health.

Anne is widely published in the medical literature, a Board member of the Massachusetts Breastfeeding Coalition, a member of the review board for the Journal of Human Lactation, and on the Breastfeeding Committee of the American Public Health Association. She has co-authored several books including Breastfeeding, Conditions and Diseases (2001), and wrote the breastfeeding section for the most recent edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves.

Assistant Director

Xena Grossman, RD, BS is Assistant Director of the Breastfeeding Center.

Research Assistants

Kimberly Niles Newton, BS is Senior Research Assistant at the Breastfeeding Center at BMC and is completing her Masters in Public Health at the Boston University School of Public Health. She will graduate in December 2006. Her undergraduate training was in Anthropology and Biology at Davidson College.

 

Patricia Francisco is also a Senior Research Assistant and has worked at the Breastfeeding Center since 2004. From the Dominican Republic, Patricia is a native Spanish speaker, and a qualified Medical Assistant. Patricia's daughter was born in the summer of 2006 and gave Patricia the chance to work on breastfeeding at a personal as well as a professional level!

Reginald Fonrose, BS , is a Research Assistant at the Breastfeeding Center and coordinates our study on formula sample packs. He has a BS in Exercise Science. As a young, athletic and ambitious man, Reginald hopes to someday make a difference in the world.

Alumni

Jessica Abrams MPH worked at the Breastfeeding Center from January 2006 - May 2007. She obtained her MPH in Maternal Child Health, and is now working as a research coordinator at the Dana Faber Cancer Institute.

Lisa Hunegs worked for the Breastfeeding Center from 2005-7, and returns to help out when needed! She is pursing a dual master degree in Public Health and Social Work from Boston University.

Simone Neuwelt, MPH is from Oregon, and after working at the Breastfeeding Center in 2006-2007, she began medical school in Puerto Rica in the fall of 2007. 


Stephanie Love, MPH worked for The Breastfeeding Center from 2006-7. She is currently in Africa, and helping to distribute copies of the Childbirth Picture Book for the Breastfeeding Center.
