Baby-Friendly(TM) Research and Information

"Baby-Friendly" is a UNICEF/WHO designation for hospitals that meet the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. UNICEF and the WHO began the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative in 1991, as an international attempt to increase breastfeeding at the hospital level. For information on becoming Baby-Friendly in the US, contact Baby-Friendly USA.

Boston Medical Center became the first Baby-Friendly Hospital in Massachusetts in 1999. As a result, "Baby-Friendly" has been a prime area for our research. We have published widely in the medical literature about the Baby-Friendly process, and about the effects of Baby-Friendly status on breastfeeding rates. The Breastfeeding Center gets many calls asking for these papers. All our Baby-Friendly published papers from current and former Breastfeeding Center staff are listed below. Click on the title and it will link you to a PDF file which can be downloaded or printed out.

Papers that BMC researchers have published in the breastfeeding area which are not specifically related to Baby-Friendly can be found on our Research page.
