Department of Anesthesiology

Keith by Keith Lewis, MD

On July 1st, 1998, Anesthesia Associates of Massachusetts assumed responsibility for the Boston University School of Medicine Anesthesiology Training Program formerly directed by Dr. Marcelle Willock. The new leadership includes Dr. Rafael Ortega as Vice-Chairman, and Dr. Glynne Stanley as Associate Program Director.

Anesthesia Associates of Massachusetts is the largest Anesthesia provider in Massachusetts providing over 70,000 anesthetics annually at multiple sites in the Greater Boston area with over 60 physicians, 58 CRNAs and 30 supportive personnel. The founder of the organization, Dr. Ellison C. Pierce set the mission for the organization more than 30 years ago stressing the importance of high quality clinical care coupled with teaching and patient safety. Continuing enhancements to our program make this an excellent site for resident teaching and education.

The merger of the former Boston City Hospital with the Boston University Hospital three years ago created the Boston Medical Center, which performs over 15,000 cases per year. Complex minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures and the busiest trauma center in Massachusetts are two of the many strengths of the many strengths of the program. Additional rotations have been added to our other sites, including a 2-month pain rotation at Saints Memorial Hospital Center and a Regional Anesthesia at the Baptist Hospital.

The research program is growing exponentially and the residents' library, workplace and CME budget have all been upgraded to strengthen the educational component of the program. State of the art teaching aides, including computer assisted instruction, are available on a variety of topics. The Department has earned the prestigious ASA Annual Award three consecutive years (1997, 1998, and 1999) for the use of computers in anesthesia education.

We are the first residency program in the country to feature an Internet based case logging system for residents which allows rapid analysis of clinical case load and facilitates ACGME resident reporting. Anesthesia Associates of Massachusetts and the faculty of the Boston University School of Medicine Department of Anesthesia are fully committed to creating the best possible program at Boston Medical Center to attract the highest quality of Anesthesia residents and Faculty. Due to the large size of the Anesthesia Associates of Massachusetts, many residents seek employment with our organization following the training program.

The diversity in the practice and the caliber of the clinicians creates an attractive environment for self-development and growth and a career in Anesthesiology.
