Research

Boston University Medical Center Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to improving perioperative patient outcomes through high quality, efficient, and professional clinical research in the areas of anesthesia, critical care medicine and pain management. The scope of clinical research trials include industry sponsored biomedical device trials, phase II-IV drug trials and investigator initiated clinical trials relating to scientific and clinical questions relevant to the practice of anesthesiology. The anesthesia research staff has spearheaded clinical trials focused in the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting, pain management, biphasic defibrillation, level of consciousness monitoring, intra operative organ protection, hemodynamic monitoring, cardiovascular risk and outcome studies and neuromuscular blocking agents. The Department offers a six- month research elective to provide the residents the opportunity to be directly involved in a number of ongoing studies. During this time the residents will acquire first hand experience with most if not all of the following fundamental research concepts:

  • Grants, Contracts, Budgets
  • Clinical Trials versus Clinical Practice
  • Clinical Data Management
  • Abstract and Manuscript Preparation
