Education & Training – About Us

Boston Medical Center is the amalgamation of the Boston City and University Hospitals, resulting in one of the most successful mergers of a municipal institution and a private health care facility in the country. With a wealth of values, tradition and commitment to exceptional care, without exception, Boston Medical Center is one of the most exciting institutions to train in anesthesiology. The department offers a three-year residency with 27 residents approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology and fully accredited by the Council for Graduate Medical Education. The department also offers fellowship training in cardiac anesthesia.

Boston Medical Center performs approximately 20,000 cases per year of all types, including pediatric and obstetrical procedures and complex minimally invasive robotic cardiac and urological operations. It is a nationally recognized level one trauma center. Residents training in anesthesiology at Boston Medical Center also enjoy outside rotations at the Baptist Hospital, an acclaimed orthopedic and regional anesthesia center of excellence, at Children’s Hospital Boston, one of the premier pediatric institutions world-wide, and at Saints Memorial Hospital Center, where residents refine their chronic pain management skills.

The Department of Anesthesiology is devoted to research and education using state-of-the-art approaches. New and exclusively-dedicated simulation and media centers complement the clinical experience gained in the operating rooms and clinics. Varied instructional activities including grand rounds, instructor-led discussions, simulation debriefings, mock written and oral exams create a stimulating and engaging educational milieu.

“The Department of Anesthesiology is devoted to research and education through clinical experience complemented by simulation and media centers.”

The didactic activities of the residency program are managed through Boston University’s sophisticated internet-based course management program. All schedules, announcements, rotation goals and objectives, quizzes, full resolution video-streamed lectures and downloadable educational programs are accessible over the internet. Password-protected access allows participants to review materials around the clock from any computer connected to the Internet. Web-based case logging for residents allows rapid analysis of clinical case load assuring a well-balanced clinical experience and ACGME compliance. The Department has earned national recognition for its educational innovations, including the prestigious ASA and PGA Annual Meeting First Prize Award for scientific and educational exhibits on multiple occasions.

The Department of Anesthesiology at Boston Medical Center is part of Anesthesia Associates of Massachusetts (AAM), one of the largest Anesthesia providers in the country. Four decades ago, Dr. Ellison C. Pierce founded this organization on the principles of high quality clinical care coupled with excellence in teaching and patient safety. Since the group’s creation it has grown to provide over 80,000 anesthetics yearly at a variety of sites in the Greater Boston area. Its workforce includes 100 physicians, an equal number of CRNA’s and a support staff of over 60 individuals. Through our residency program, AAM continues its mission of providing the best care, while training superb clinicians and education. The faculty appointed by Boston University for resident teaching is comprised of a select group of outstanding educators and attendings from the larger practice. Thus, trainees experience personalized attention while benefiting from AAM’s culture of efficiency, safety, sound operating room management and professionalism. Our unremitting dedication to the betterment of our Residency Program makes Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine an excellent environment for teaching and learning.
