Who We Are

The Center for HIV/AIDS Care and Research (CHACR) at Boston Medical Center (BMC) is one of the leading providers of HIV/AIDS care in the country. Established in 2001, the center blends its wealth of experience in caring for patients with HIV and AIDS with the latest prevention and treatment options developed through basic and clinical research. The CHACR provides high-quality, culturally sensitive patient care in a comprehensive setting. Our patients have access to HIV pharmacists, case managers, social workers, mental health counselors, and certified HIV nurses, in addition to their HIV doctor. A clinical study staff located in the clinic provides opportunities for patients to enroll in clinical trials that offer access to investigational drugs not otherwise available.

CHACR clinicians and researchers are members of the Boston University (BU) School of Medicine, BU School of Public Health, BU Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences faculty. They represent over a dozen departments and specialites, and their expertise ranges from innate immunity to HIV drug adherence to preconception counseling for HIV-positive couples. They mentor undergraduates, graduate students, medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. Both CHACR faculty and staff participate in patient and provider education.

In addition to clinical care, research, and teaching, the CHACR focuses on providing extensive community service. Each year, the CHACR sponsors a World AIDS Day and Gay Pride event to educate and honor the HIV and BMC communities. Through our programs here at BMC and collaborations with local community-based organizations, CHACR also offers regular HIV prevention education, testing, counseling, and support groups to the people of greater Boston, regardless of status or ability to pay.
