HIV Specialty Residency Program

Overview

The HIV specialty pharmacy residency program offered in the Center for HIV/AIDS Care and Research (CHACR) at Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a post-graduate educational experience designed to develop pharmacists skilled in the management of HIV infection and other common infectious diseases. The program is academically affiliated with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS). This affiliation affords the resident opportunities to develop teaching skills by providing experiential training and didactic instruction to pharmacy students and other health care professionals.

The HIV specialty pharmacy resident will receive instruction and experience in the following areas:

  • Clinical practice - inpatient and outpatient
  • Education
  • Clinical research, including investigational drug services
  • Electives

The program will develop the practical and specialized skills needed by current and future HIV pharmacy practitioners. The majority of the resident’s time will be spent in the (outpatient) adherence clinic and on the inpatient floors. The remaining time will be reserved for a research rotation, either in the Investigational Drug Service, in an HIV research laboratory, or on a research project.

The program will provide a minimum of 2000 hours of learning and teaching time over a period of 52 weeks starting August 1 each year. The residency director will provide written learning objectives at the beginning of the year. These objectives will specify the skills and knowledge each resident will gain upon successful completion of each assigned activity. The sequence of the resident’s activities will also be established at the beginning of the residency.

Program Goals

  • Engage the resident in the clinical, educational, operational, and administrative aspects of pharmacy in an HIV specialty practice
  • Prepare the resident to assume clinical, educational, operational, and administrative responsibilities in an HIV specialty setting
  • Prepare the resident to take responsibility for providing leadership in the delivery of pharmaceutical care and development of pharmacy services in an HIV specialty setting
  • Develop the resident’s ability to adapt pharmaceutical care to patient diversity in an HIV specialty setting
  • Develop the resident’s abilities to precept and teach
