TESTING

All testing at Project TRUST is available Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Types of HIV tests

OraQuick Advance (Rapid Test)

The Rapid Test is performed on a drop of blood taken from your finger.  It takes 20 minutes to process and you will receive your result the same day.  It has 99.6% sensitivity and 100% specificity.  This is a screening test, meaning, if your result is "reactive," we must draw your blood the same day for confirmation.  The Rapid Test can only be done confidentially.

Blood Test (Serum Test)

This test is performed by drawing your blood and sending it to the lab for processing.  Your counselor will schedule a follow-up appointment with you in 2 weeks so that you can pick up your result.  Your result must be picked up in person.  The HIV Blood Test has 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity.  This test can be done both confidentially and anonymously.

OraSure (OMT)

This test is performed by collecting a sample from your mouth and sending it to the lab for processing.  Your counselor will schedule a follow-up appointment with you in 2 weeks so that you can pick up your result.  Your result must be picked up in person.  The OraSure test has 98.6% sensitivity and 97.7% specificity.  If the OraSure test comes back positive, your counselor must draw your blood for confirmation.  The OraSure test can be done both confidentially and anonymously.

Testing for Hepatitis B & C

Hepatitis B & C Test

This test is performed by drawing your blood and sending it to the lab for processing.  This test will screen your blood for both Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.  This test can only be done confidentially.  Your counselor will schedule a follow-up appointment with you in 2 weeks so that you can pick up your Hepatitis B & C results.  Your results must be picked up in person.  The Hepatitis B & C Test has 99.95% specificity.  All clients receiving this test are offered vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B at our Public Health STD Clinic.

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) tests

You must be asymptomatic (not experiencing any symptoms).  If you are experiencing symptoms, i.e., itching, burning, or sores, please visit our Public Health / STD Clinic for a free exam and treatment.  If you were recently treated for any of these STIs, you must wait 30 days after stopping treatment before retesting.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea testing is done via a urine test.  This test will test your urine for both infections.  This test can only be done confidentially.  Your counselor will schedule a follow-up appointment with you in 2 weeks so that you can pick up your results.

Syphillis

This test is performed by drawing your blood and sending it to the lab for processing.  This test can only be done confidentially.  Your counselor will schedule a follow-up appointment with you in 2 weeks so that you can pick up your result.

Definitions

Sensitivity   The ability of a test to detect the infection, i.e., positive result.

Specificity   The ability of a test to detect non-infection, i.e., negative result.

Anonymous Testing   Your name is not linked to your specimen or test result.  Instead, we use a random code.  You do not even need to tell us your name or any other identifying information.  We cannot give you a copy of your test result if you test anonymously.

Confidential Testing   We record your name and your contact information for our records.  (This information is not shared with anyone outside of Project TRUST, including the lab that processes your specimen.)  Confidential Testing provides the advantage of allowing your counselor to follow-up with you and coordinate any necessary referrals you may need, i.e., health care, substance abuse treatment, etc.
